Standards & Legislation

Disability Discrimination Act

It is a case of discrimination if you do not provide free and easy access and egress to your building for physically disabled people. During building fire evacuation this can become significantly harder when normal passenger lifts should not be used. Therefore a management procedure of assisting disabled people is often used.

Building regulations

Part B of building regulations now state that:

  • To facilitate the effective evacuation of people from refuges an emergency voice communication (EVC) system should be provided.
  • It is essential that the occupants of each refuge are able to alert other people that they are in need of assistance and for them to be reassured that this assistance will be forthcoming.

Health & Safety

It is very important that if you ask member of staff to be a fire warden or to assist in the evacuation of a disabled person that you keep the risk to that person to the absolute minimum. The Refuge Alerter system allows all members of staff to carry a personal refuge communicator to allow them communication with the refuge's, other wardens and the base station. This enables you to keep contact with all people involved in the evacuation minimising risk.

British Standards

Refuge Alerter® as with all our systems are designed to meet and exceed the relevant parts of the British standard BS5839.
