To guarantee coverage of large areas such as a university campus or very large building it is possible to install a radio repeater to act as a relay mechanism. Normally the repeater and its antenna would be located as high as possible in the centre of the area of coverage; a site survey will confirm the actual location.

The repeater will normally have an external antenna and will require a mains electricity supply. As it is part of the refuge communication system it will incorporate a back up battery in case of mains failure and is fault monitored at the base station.
