The University of Westminster was established as the first British Polytechnic University in 1838. Since then it has been closely involved in London’s business, professional and academic life. Now, with the help of Refuge Alerter®, the University of Westminster is investing even more into their commitment to provide equality for their students, employees and visitors.
The University has recently installed Refuge Alerter, a two-way radio-based emergency voice communication (EVC) system, which is fitted in each of the refuge points within their Harrow Campus and Regent Campus. It is used in the event of a building fire evacuation and other emergency situations, where those in need of assistance can wait safely whilst communicating with their imminent rescuers.
Refuge Alerter gave the University a cost effective solution saving time and disruption, without the unsightly cabling associated with traditional hard-wired EVC systems and importantly, the Regent Campus’ historic architecture, which incorporates marble floors, walls and archways, was not disrupted by the installation of the radio-based system.
The University of Westminster’s, Project Co-ordinator, John Vickery commented: “We are delighted with the way Deaf Alerter plc’s Refuge Alerter system has enhanced our building’s safety. The flexibility of a radio-based disabled refuge system was a key influencing factor when selecting the most suitable EVC system for the University. The minimal intrusion and disruption offered by Refuge Alerter could not be matched. Students, employees and visitors can wait with confidence knowing that building management and rescue teams will assistance their safe evacuation from the building should an emergency situation arise, which is in great keeping with our Disability Equality Duty policy.”
